Five words won't do it. You get thirty.

Most personality tests give you five broad traits and a label. This one also scores the thirty detail traits underneath them. Conscientious tells you little until you know whether you're orderly, dutiful or just relentlessly driven.

One trait, six detail traitsexample

This person scores higher than 80% of men aged 25–34 on conscientiousness. Here is what that is made of.

Orderliness17/2081
Self-efficacy18/2075
Achievement-striving18/2071
Cautiousness16/2064
Dutifulness17/2064
Self-discipline15/2060
Neat and driven, and less self-disciplined than you'd guess. They get there through systems more than willpower. One overall score would have told you none of that.

Each bar shows how this person compares with men aged 25–34 among the 619,150 people who took the same questionnaire online.

The five, and what's under them

The Big Five has decades of research behind it, more than any other personality model. Each trait splits into six detail traits, and your report scores every one.

Openness

How drawn you are to new ideas and experiences. Imagination, love of art, depth of feeling, adventurousness, curiosity about ideas and openness to new values.

Conscientiousness

How you get things done. Self-belief, tidiness, sense of duty, drive, self-discipline and thinking before you act.

Extraversion

Where you get your energy. Friendliness, liking a crowd, assertiveness, pace of life, thrill-seeking and cheerfulness.

Agreeableness

How you treat other people. Trust, honesty, helpfulness, cooperation, modesty and sympathy.

Neuroticism

How strongly you feel stress and upset. Worry, anger, low mood, self-consciousness, giving in to urges and feeling overwhelmed.

Not a type

No four-letter label, no animal, no house. Each trait is a sliding scale. You sit somewhere along thirty of them, and almost nobody sits at an end.

How it works

1
Answer 120 statements

Five options, from very inaccurate to very accurate. No timer and no right answers. Your first instinct is usually the truest.

2
We compare you with people like you

We add up your answers on the 4 statements behind each detail trait and compare them with people your age and sex who took the same questionnaire online.

3
You get thirty answers

Your five main traits, all thirty detail traits, and a plain-English read of where they pull against each other.

While you're here

This measures who you are. Not how you think.

Personality and ability are separate things. A high openness score says nothing about your reasoning. If it's reasoning you came for, that's a different test, and it's free too.

I've done the four-letter one three times and got three answers. This gave me thirty numbers and a sentence about why two of them contradict each other.

Low on liking a crowd, high on assertiveness. I'd spent years thinking I was bad at people. Turns out I just don't like parties.

It told me exactly who it was comparing me with, and that the group skews young and female. I have never seen one of these admit that.
